interview: photography and the sculpted image -Paul W Ruiz-
Graduating as a sculptor from Chelsea College of Art and Design and with a MSc in Theoretical Psychoanalysis from UCL, Agatha A. Nitecka’s photography deals with the nature of intimacy and the relationship between the two (or more). This includes the relationship between the viewer and the photograph, the photographed, the photographer and the camera. Working predominantly with moving (super8 film) and still images (ranging from small, medium, large format to Polaroid and even cyanotype) her sculptural background informs the formal aspects of her work in terms of how she deals with space, approaches the objects and then represents the image. Through a muted palette and selective cropping, the beauty of the human body is captured in her imagery. With psychoanalysis as her theoretical base, working closely with texts of Winnicott, Lacan, Irigaray, Barthes and Anzieu, it becomes a strong framework that holds her work and ideas together.
